Between hockey and cross country skiing the time flew by. Elly is even skiing this year. We finally got some snowboarding in last night at Hidden Valley. The weather was great!

So the warmer weather didn't last. It's sooooo cooooold today.
In the past three days I've seen three moose. The one that sprinted in front of my truck yesterday posed for pictures.

The weather's been so warm and sunny. It was a great day for being outside. First cross country skiing at school. Then power skating on the lake. Then snowboarding at Hidden Valley. Looks like it's going to be another perfectly sunny winters day. We'll have to get some more outdoor activities done before the rain comes on Sunday.

Elly and I spent the afternoon sliding down the path to the lake. The weather is so perfect for a 2 year old to be outside.
It is pretty neat to look out the front window and watch some of the neighbors in our bay enjoying the frozen lake. I counted 5 rinks in our bay alone. People are out cross country skiing, snowmobiling, skating, tobogganing and ice fishing at all hours.

I just finished my very first power skating lesson on our outdoor rink(on the lake). The weather was sunny and beautiful. The ice conditions were excellent. We were able do scullies, crosscuts, edges, shoot- the ducks, bracket-threes, power circles with turns and more. It was a two hour class and everyone worked up a sweat.
I always wanted to have my own rink!

The lake is starting to freeze. Elly asks every day if she can go skating on it? Not yet - But maybe we'll be skating on it by the holidays.
True - Athletes should focus on getting enough complex carbohydrate to refuel the body's glycogen stores, which are used up during strenuous exercise. Also, a moderate protein and low to moderate fat intake is recommended for the best fuel mix. Trusted information on the healthy eating from Dietitians of Canada.

Big, White and Fluffy snow everywhere. The snow is back and falling steady. Elly and I are heading out to plow the driveways with the ATV.
Special thanks to Allan and Brice. They came for a visit and built us a nice, big woodshed, AND fixed the water in the office. We now have hot water in there!
True or False: Athletes need a diet that is high in carbohydrates, moderate in protein and low to moderate in fat content.

True or False? If you lose weight during a training session you have lost water not fat.
True: Athletes can lose a considerable amount of water as sweat during a workout resulting in weight loss. This quick weight loss is not due to loss of fat. Athletes need to replace fluid/sweat losses in order to prevent dehydration. Dehydration will cause an athlete's performance to decline.

We woke up this morning to a winter wonderland. Elly was so excited, she was out playing in the snow right after breakfast. The snow in the trees looks so beautiful in the sunshine. Hurray the snow is here! Let's hope it stays.

FALSE - All athletes should use the Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating as a starting point for planning a training diet, regardless of the sport. The Guide provides a range of daily recommendations for each of the four food groups: Grain Products; Vegetables and Fruits; Milk Products; & Meat and Meat Alternatives. Because most athletes need more food during training, they should choose lots of high carbohydrate grains, fruits and vegetables and may use other foods in moderation to meet additional energy needs.

Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating does not apply to athletes. Answer to come.
Thanks to Carl's hockey coach, Jamie Sollman, for the great hand out.

You are not going to believe this, but we all went public skating tonight! Carl had to break in a new pair of hockey skates. Elly loved it! She giggled and giggled. She actually started to skate on her own. Adam and I haven't been on skates since the summer. We felt a little out of shape. LOL More public skating in our future. Thanks to the Burk's Falls Arena and staff, we enjoy your little rink (& the coffee). Kim

Turns out the nest outside Elly's window is still in question? It's not a grouse nest? It's not a bluebird nest? Maybe the woodpecker that likes to trick us???
Elly's getting sick of all this nice weather. Everyday she asks for snow. She just wants to go tubing! Carl wants to go snowboarding. But I'll enjoying all the nice walks.

Outside Elly's bedroom is the biggest birds nest I've ever seen. It sways up high in the top of a birch tree, above the trampoline area. Finally, Elly saw the huge grouse fly up, sit on a branch and watch her. She thinks it her birdie. Now the grouse follows Adam around. Never thought we'd have a pet grouse.
I'm very proud of my son and his friend Cody. They spent hours tonight volunteering for their school. Hauling logs and branches, and cleaning up the trails through the bush. Their school has beautiful trails for hiking, cross country running & skiing, and snow shoeing.

What beautiful weather! We had a bonfire on the beach last night.
We've had several knocking noises lately, but when we answered the door nobody was there. Puzzling! Then we saw the woodpecker, pecking on our wood siding. We all had a good laugh.
The trampoline is put away, the leaves have fallen from the trees, WE ARE READY FOR LOTS OF SNOW! Elly and Carl can't wait.
Thanks to all of you that read my blog.

The boats are out of the water and winterized. No more skiing for Adam and Carl this year.
Hope everyone out there is feeling okay. Carl and Elly were hit with a bad flu bug. But feeling good now.
I wish I could have seen some of our summer skaters compete at Skokie Skate in Huntsville, but Elly was in the middle of her flu. I here everyone did well. Congrats! Happy to here that Jason made the Winter Games. Way to go!
Also congrats to Idoia for passing her competitive tests.

Adam spent the last couple of days fixing the draining problem behind the main lodge. During a rain storm we would get a large puddle behind the main lodge. In the winter that area is very icy and in the spring it floods the basement. The only problem I see now is there won't be a big puddle for the mud wrestling at summer camp. LOL
Adam also cleared a nice area behind the rock wall to have a basketball court. More Fun!!

Elly and I spent some time cleaning up the 1km trail this week. The trail is glowing with bright, colourful leaves. When we're quiet we see birds (mainly grouse) and white tailed deer. Carl's using the trail to train for a biathlon (ski & shoot).
To our campers: Have a great skating season. Good luck with all your games and competitions.

Just got in from driving the boat for Adam to ski the course. It's suppose to be a cold rainy day today, but we woke up to a beautiful sunshiny colourful view of the lake. We watched the blue heron fishing while we had our morning coffee. Then we all dressed warm, the temperature was only +5, and took Adam skiing.
Hope everyone is enjoying this warm fall weather!
